Awards Season

Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAGS)

Hello my fashionable beau’s and belles! I am very sorry I am late with this blogpost but I hope it was worth the wait and satisfies your red carpet cravings. I don’t know about you but I was pleasantly surprised by what I saw from the SAG’s. Elegant, demure and conservative are the words that spring to mind. The common denominators amongst our celebrities were high necklines and long sleeved dresses. The full-skirted silhouettes were certainly bringing a royal flare to the evenings fashion . It’s no surprise that they scrub up pretty well, but after the shock-horror of the National Television Awards, it was certainly refreshing.

Helen Mirren, Saoirse Ronan and Alicia Vikander all rocked their long sleeved ensembles. The starlets opted for texture and embellishment making their demure gowns stand out among the crowds. Helen Mirren sparkled in a silver Jenny Packham dress. Saoirse Ronan was pretty in pink in a textured embossed dress from Michael Kors and Alicia Vikander was glistening in a sequin Louis Vuitton dress. My favourite of this style was Eva Longoria. She wore a heavily embellished custom made gown by Welsh fashion designer Julian Macdonald. I think the figure forming fit certainly compliments her petite and toned frame while the olive green colour is gorgeous against her sallow skin and dark hair  (not to mention that it’s a colour I am seeing popping up in SS16 collections so watch this space). As the least desperate housewife, she oozes sex appeal with the plunging V-neckline and barely-there back. Eva has finished off her look with Lorraine Schwartz jewellery and black strappy sandals.

Another style I noted that was a fave with our celebrities was in contrast to the above, A-line dresses. Anna Faris, Rachel McAdams and our very own Fashion Police host Giuliana Rancic were channelling their inner Audrey Hepburn. Rachel McAdams wore a black lace Elie Saab dress, which is one of my favourite designers! Giuliana rancic wore a very fifties style Gauri and Nainika dress. The appliqué flowers and full skirt is very different for Giuliana as she usually opts for a more figure fitting silhouette. She always looks well but I can’t decide which style I prefer on her. In particular, Anna Faris stood out for me. I do believe it is always risky business wearing red to a red carpet but I really loved her dress. I think she was the epitome of paired back elegance with a contemporary twist. She wore a Naeem Khan dress that fit her like a glove. Her hair was pulled back in classic bun, had a tiny red clutch, it looks satin, and barely-there metallic platform Stuart Weitzman shoes. I think the folded over collar and sleeves adds a vintage touch which would certainly get Audrey’s approval. A serious contender for best dressed for me!

The next fad I noticed on the red carpet was the thigh high split. Not a preferred choice of mine but the legs were out last Saturday night. I don’t think that what Angelina Jolie did for the 2012 Oscars was achieved at the SAG’s. For some reason, many of these dresses look unfinished with pieces looking like they were missing rather than cut out. Either way, I am not a fan. I didn’t buy any clothes with cut outs or missing panels before and I certainly won’t be buying any in the future. I think they look sloppy and cheap, which these dresses are certainly not. I appreciate the hint of sex appeal celebrities and designers want to convey but I stand by the less is more thing. Unfortunately, the ladies who did not get this memo and won’t be getting a best dressed nom from me are Joanne Froggatt, Laverne Cox, Brie Larson and  Eva Amurri. Ladies, make sure you’re fully dressed the next time you’re attending an awards show! The only celebrity apart from Anna Faris who I think pulled this look off was Sarah Hyland. The Modern Family star usually nails the red carpet appearances keeping the formal wear young and contemporary. I really like her Cadbury’s purple J Mendel strapless dress, she’s finished off her look with black barely-there Giuseppe Zanotti heels and Lorraine Schwartz jewellery. The strapless bodice and pencil style suits her column shape very well. She knows her body type, what shape suits her and that is why I always look out for Sarah Hyland on the red carpet.

As the award season stakes are rising so are the fashion stakes. With each ceremony only as good as the last, I cannot wait to see what stop will be pulled out for this years Oscars. Stay tuned for more of my coverage on this seasons red carpet fashion! But if you had to choose a best dressed from the SAG’s who would it be? Please feel free to leave you comments below!
